What is mivacurium used for?

Mivacurium is a prescription medicine that is used to calm muscles during surgery. It is used to calm muscles while on a breathing machine.

Description

Mivacurium is a short-acting, nondepolarizing skeletal muscle relaxant for intravenous (IV) administration. Mivacurium chloride is [R-[R*,R*-(E)]]-2,2′-[(1,8-dioxo-4octene-1,8-diyl)bis(oxy-3,1-propanediyl)]bis[1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6,7-dimethoxy-2-methyl-1[(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)methyl]isoquinolinium] dichloride. The molecular formula is C58H80Cl2N2O14 and the molecular weight is 1100.18. The structural formula is:

The partition coefficient of the compound is 0.015 in a 1-octanol/distilled water system at 25°C.

 

Before taking mivacurium, tell your doctor:

  • If you are allergic to mivacurium; any part of this medicine; or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
  • If you have an atypical plasma cholinesterase gene.

  • Very bad and sometimes deadly allergic reactions have rarely happened. Talk with your doctor.
  • If you are 65 or older, use mivacurium with care. You could have more side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks of using mivacurium while you are pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about any risks to your baby.

How is mivacurium best taken?

Use mivacurium as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • This medicine is given as a shot into a vein or into a vein nonstop for a period of time.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

  • This medicine is given on an as needed basis.

What are the side effects of mivacurium that I need to call my doctor about immediately?

WARNING/CAUTION: Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

What are some other side effects of mivacurium?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

  • Flushing.
