SUPRANE is nonflammable as defined by the requirements of International Electrotechnical Commission 601-2-13.

SUPRANE is a colorless, volatile liquid below 22.8°C. Data indicate that SUPRANE is stable when stored under normal room lighting conditions according to instructions.

SUPRANE is chemically stable. The only known degradation reaction is through prolonged direct contact with soda lime producing low levels of fluoroform (CHF3). The amount of CHF3 obtained is similar to that produced with MAC-equivalent doses of isoflurane. No discernible degradation occurs in the presence of strong acids.

SUPRANE does not corrode stainless steel, brass, aluminum, anodized aluminum, nickel plated brass, copper, or beryllium.

Before taking desflurane, tell your doctor:

  • If you are allergic to desflurane; any part of this medicine; or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
  • If you or a family member have had muscle problems or a certain health problem called malignant hyperthermia. Signs of malignant hyperthermia include a very high fever, a fast heartbeat, muscle stiffness, and trouble breathing.
  • If you have had liver problems after getting an anesthetic.

This is not a list of all drugs or health problems that interact with desflurane.

Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take desflurane with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

What are some things I need to know or do while I take desflurane?

For all patients taking desflurane:

  • Tell all of your health care providers that you take desflurane. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
  • Avoid driving and doing other tasks or actions that call for you to be alert until the effects of desflurane wear off and you feel fully awake.
  • Talk with your doctor before you drink alcohol or use other drugs and natural products that slow your actions.
  • High potassium levels have rarely happened with inhaled anesthesia drugs. This has led to abnormal heartbeats and death in some children after surgery. The chance may be raised in people with certain muscle problems. Talk with the doctor.
  • If you have high blood sugar (diabetes), you will need to watch your blood sugar closely.
  • Studies in young animals and children have shown that frequent or long-term use of anesthesia drugs or drugs used for sleep in children younger than 3 years of age may lead to long-term brain problems. This may also happen in unborn babies if the mother uses desflurane during the third trimester of pregnancy. Talk with the doctor.
  • If you are 65 or older, use desflurane with care. You could have more side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You will need to talk about the benefits and risks to you and the baby.

Children:

  • Use with care in children. Talk with the doctor.

How is desflurane best taken?

Use desflurane as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

  • It is given as a liquid for breathing into the lungs by a doctor.

What do I do if I miss a dose?
